[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Description” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%2300bab3″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]A trail immersed in the wonderful colors of Sicily, from the blue of the sea to the pink-red Dolomite rock and the green of the Mediterranean scrub, to get into the Nature Reserve of Mount Cofano.
Notes: This itinerary is the continuation of a shorter itinerary called Santa Margherita Bay
Entrance ticket: 2 euros
The trail is very long and only recommended for experienced hikers (but you can also stop on the beach and in the incredible coves that follow each other on the coast). It will amaze you with its colors and the beautiful coastal scenery, featuring the color gradations of the sea, which blends with the green of the low Mediterranean scrub.
The backdrop is Mount Cofano, a mountain looming over the sea, a massive Dolomite rock structure, which divides the Cofano Gulf from the Bonagia Gulf. All around, the pink-red rock towering into the sky contrasting with its blue and green surroundings.
The stretch of coast you are about to skirt features some geological rarities, peculiar caves and cultural elements that the Waypoints along the trail will unravel for you.
At Santa Margherita Bay, you will find a beautiful light-colored, sometimes pink sand beach, nestled in the rocky coast: here, the seabed gently slopes, allowing the sea to turn from turquoise to deep blue shades … but do not give in to the temptation to take a dip in the water, because a long walk still awaits you!
A little further head, you will find what remains of the Cofano tuna farm, an enchanting fishermen’s village located on the gulf, at the foot of the mountain, dominated by a magnificent sixteenth-century tower. A place surrounded by silence and dwarf palms featuring coves of crystal-clear water.
Continuing beyond the Zita Pass, which is linked to a particular local legend, you can reach your final destination: a large and impressive prehistoric cave, whose entrance featured a dense vegetation of dwarf palms.
The return leg lasts about 4 hours (at a slow pace), just as long as the way in. We therefore recommend to book shuttle service to the Tono Tower at the reception, or to leave early to get back before the sun sets … and maybe go back to Santa Margherita Bay to take that dip in the water you missed in the morning!
