This itinerary is not recommended for children under 7, since in some sections, it entails the crossing of dry-stone walls that surround land plots.
Strollers are strongly discouraged, and the entire trail is recommended only for expert hikers.
Explore the Ragusa province made of country roads, fields and pastures, descending towards the Castle of Donnafugata to reach the Cava Sughera.
The most distinctive element of this trail nestled in the typical landscapes of Ragusa is the Hyblaean Walls you will walk along or, at times, even cross over. The uniqueness of these dry stone walls (built without mortar) has earned them a place on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
One of the main attractions of this area is the magic and solitary Sughera (cork oak), which for more than 200 years has been thriving on this particular limestone soil.
But wonders do not end there. Indeed, the trail starts at Contrada Buttino, 500 meters from the Cave of Trabacche, another must-see for those who visit the Ragusa province.
This very alluring cave owes its fame to an episode of “Inspector Montalbano”, titled “The Terracotta Dog”. In reality, it is an ancient necropolis, a Roman and Byzantine burial site, which may have been already active during the Hellenistic period.
Have fun discovering the origins of the name by reading the APP waypoints along the way!
