[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_custom_heading text=”Description” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%2300bab3″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]An unforgettable experience for those who do not yet know Erice, but also a thrill for those who have already visited the beautiful town. An old dirt road, with breathtaking views, which unwinds through  rocks to reach first striking rural churches and then climb up to the ancient Cyclopean walls of Sicily’s most beautiful and unspoiled medieval town.

You can start your hike on foot from the San Marco vacation rentals, covering almost 2 km until the beginning of the old basalt road, or you can decide to park at the end of Via Caposcale and, from there, take theTrazzera Regia (Royal Basalt Road).
The trazzere were ancient roads that in the past, in Sicily, were used primarily for the transit of herds: on the old trazzera that climbs towards Erice you can still see the remains of the original paving stones.
The first part of the trail unwinds in a gradual and steady climb, which is not too exhausting. The view will leave you in awe for its beauty and you eyes will hardly be able to keep on the trail, distracted by the charm given off by the view that sweeps the entire gulf, from the Bonagia tuna farm to Mount Cofano.
Along the way, you will first come across the ruins of an abandoned Byzantine church which, in the shade of tall pine trees, seems to stand in contemplation of the Gulf of Trapani panorama. Continuing on, you will reach the ruins of another little church, which stands on an even more enviable location, with an equally spectacular view.

The final stretch of the trail is beautiful and unexpected: it unwinds within a thick and cool grove of young oaks.

The impact at the town’s entrance will be stronger. Porta Spada will open before your eyes among the famous and spectacular Cyclopean walls, which are best preserved in this particular area. You cannot miss the chance to visit Erice’s historic center, if only to recover your energy in one of the famous local bakeries or while sipping a good arancino (a Sicilian orange liqueur).

The app will offer some wisdom on this too!
