This trail is recommended for experienced hikers. It mostly unwinds across the dry riverbed, but requires you to keep an eye on the weather in the days preceding the excursion. Bring along a good supply of water, because there will be none along the way.
The first portion of the itinerary is on the road, and then you jump over a wall to access the dirt road (follow carefully the waypoint on the APP track).
Along this route, you will be able to see up close the enchanting landscape typical of the Ragusa area, among almond and olive trees protected by the Hyblaean Walls, distinctive dry stone walls whose uniqueness has earned them a place on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Strolling along the Ragusa fields, which may be green or burnt by the sun, depending on the season, you can admire the white geometry of the stone walls built to protect olive and almond trees – a constant presence that seemingly seeks to accompany you along the way.
As soon as you reach a small cave, it’s time to head to the creek to begin your journey inside the riverbed. Only in some places you will need to walk away from the riverbed, continuing, in this case, along the left bank. All around you, you will find carob trees, olive trees, euphorbia bushes, holly, ivy and mastic trees.
The trail extends all the way to the road, where you can choose to either continue to the Castle of Donnafugata or close the loop and return to Casato Licitra: a difficult choice, isn’t it?
