Atop Mount Sparagio, in the brigand’s hideout

Description

From atop Mount Sparagio, you can admire the Egadi Islands, the Zingaro Mountains and the Palermo Mountains, amidst a peculiar landscape “created” by grazing and fires.

This route will take you to 1,100 meters a.s.l.. on the highest peak of the mountains of the Trapani province.
The first part of the trail is within the Giacolamaro Forest, a dense pine forest where you can walk while enjoying the coolness offered by trees. In the forest, you also find two small reservoirs and a Park Rangers’ house featuring a cute “pagghiaio” (haystack) at its side.
Climbing up to Monte Sparagio is a little like flying over an inaccessible peak, an adventure that takes you to a secret and impervious place in which, as popular legend has it, there was a flat rectangular rock where a band of brigands used to gather in 1862.
The Monte Sparagio environment is very unique, barren and rocky, a feature resulting from grazing and fires that pushed rocks to the surface, allowing little vegetation to remain.
Where rocks lay now, there were once oak tree groves, eventually obliterated by fires.
Along this trail, you can encounter Dwarf Palms, plants with frequently charred trunks, which, however, draw their strength by fires, surviving where other plants cannot.
In winter, however, the landscape changes, becoming covered in cyclamens, marigolds, crocuses and buttercups. In spring, Sicilian irises are at their best.
Moving on to Sella Colma di Mezzo, you’ll be surprised by the seemingly lunar landscape of this summit, where a few trees stubbornly still grow in the midst of thousands of sharp rocks.

Along the trail, it is not difficult to spot birds of prey and even some reptiles, like green lizards and geckos. Finally, from the top, the kingdom of bandits, you will overlook the Zingaro Mountains and Egadi Islands, reaching all the way to the Palermo Mountains.
