Sella Colma di Mezzo: coolness and views from Mount Sparagio

Description

A moderate walk for those who are not fit enough to reach the top of the mountain, but still want the coolness of the forest and breathtaking views.

Notes: this trail is the first part of a longer itinerary called “The Summit of Monte Sparagio”

The trail is largely inside the Giacolamaro Forest, a dense pine forest that allows you walking under the coolness of oak and pine trees. After you walk through its initial flat portion, the trail continues on a mild slope, zigzagging through the forest to finally reach a plateau where trees become more and more sparse.
At higher altitudes, your fatigue increases, but the view on your left will pay off, with breathtaking views of the mountains, first over Mount Palatimone and then along the entire Cofano Gulf, up to Cape San Vito. In reality, those who have sharper vision can hardly miss, along the entire trail and in the distance, the summit of Mount Erice.
The environment of the different peaks of Mount Sparagio is special, very rocky and barren: a feature resulting from grazing and fires that pushed rocks to the surface, allowing little vegetation to remain.
Where rocks lay now, there were once oak tree groves, eventually obliterated by fires.
Along this trail, you can encounter Dwarf Palms, plants with frequently charred trunks, which, however, draw their strength by fires, surviving where other plants cannot.
In winter, however, the landscape changes, becoming covered in cyclamens, marigolds, crocuses and buttercups. In spring, Sicilian irises are at their best.
The tour ends in Sella Colma di Mezzo, where it may not be too difficult to spot a few birds of prey. Here, we invite you to stop and admire a seemingly lunar landscape with some occasional tree that stubbornly grew in the middle of thousands of rocks: it makes one wonder if, in the company of children, some landscape could inspire some fairy tale or legend!
