The Ficuzza woods … along the old railroad

Description

An itinerary through the woods along the old tracks of a Sicilian railroad: to the discovery of the Ficuzza Forest Nature Reserve.

A Nature Reserve established in 2000 to protect and promote reforestation, the Ficuzza Forest, Busambra Rocca, Cappelliere Woods and Gorgo del Drago are today managed by the Forestry Authority.
Until 1959, this area was crossed by a narrow-gauge railway connecting many Sicilian cities, and, in particular, Palermo with inland villages.
This interesting itinerary unwinds along a stretch of the railway, passing through a tunnel, a retaining wall and a beautiful forest.

The trip ends in the village of Ficuzza, where you can visit the beautiful “Royal Hunting Lodge” of King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and the Regional Wildlife Recovery Centre managed by the LIPU agency
