The Rio Forgia trial, up to the Mount Cofano reserve
A beautiful walk stretching from the prehistoric cave of the Nature Reserve of Mount Cofano, searching for local history and legends.
It starts from the parking lot in the proximity of Rio Forgia.
For most of the trail, you can stroll along the promenade, near coast, beach and water, listening to the sound of waves on the shore and the cries of gulls, and smelling the salt air loaded with iodine.
During your walk, you will run into Mount Cofano, which proudly rises from the sea, as guarding the stretch of coast over which you are walking. The promontory of Mount Cofano became a Nature Reserve thanks to the presence of many interesting endemic plants. Among its cliffs grows a small plant that derives its botanical name from the mount housing it – the Sparrow hawk of Mount Cofano (Hieracium cophanense), which lives here with other rarities such as pearl grasses, euphorbia bushes and wild carnations.
The trail will first lead you to the village of Cornino, then to skirt the Buguto cove, a beautiful stretch of sand, and finally to the Reserve where you come across the beautiful coastal tower of San Giovanni.
Here, the landscape becomes even more attractive thanks to the contrast between the steep and rugged Dolomite rock wall and the deep blue sea, but also for the powerful presence of Mauritanian grasses and dwarf palms scattered about among white rocks rising from the ground like mushrooms. Even the cliff to your left is another geological rarity, as it presents a particular biostructure (a carbonate platform) that is very similar to that of coral reefs.
The trail continues along the steep slopes of the mount up to the Chapel of the Crucifix. Here, topped by a rocky wall, almost hidden by dense vegetation of dwarf palms, there is a majestic cave of great archaeological and paleontological interest, the final destination of our hike.
If you still want to walk and continue for 2 km up to the Tower of Tono, you can select the itinerary called “Castelluzzo – MOUNT COFANO RESERVE”. But if you are tired, you can go back and admire again the sights you just enjoyed.
