Strolling along Piazza Armerina to the Villa del Casale

Description

An itinerary that begins in Piazza Armerina, runs through the town, and plunges into a rural landscape before reaching the ancient Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first in the world for the vastness of its mosaics.

The itinerary starts directly from the “La Quercia e l’Asino” B&B.  The first leg, in the direction of Piazza Armerina, is on asphalt, in the modern area of town, which does not feature major tourist attractions. If you wish to start from the historic town, you can go to Porta Castellina. If prefer walking, do not miss a stop in front of the Grand Priory of St. Andrea, a beautiful Norman church (which, unfortunately, is not open to the public).

You can then proceed to the historic city, entering through Porta Castellina, the town’s only remaining ancient gate, which still holds the distinction of being the first gate of Piazza Armerina.

The route then crosses Piazza Garibaldi, the ancient heart of Piazza Armerina, the center of city life and where the Town Hall stands. Here, you can have some fun with your children looking for the sundial on the facade of the Palace (which, together with the fresco, was meant to create an optical effect that distorted the building’s contours).
Once you arrive at the fountain of the four channels, you can stock up on fresh water. The fountain is easily recognizable for the 4 masks from which water from the mountains springs all year long. You can learn more about the funny masks from your APP waypoints along your hike. Near the fountain, you can also find a washhouse with 20 stations: so many people used to do their laundry in Piazza Armerina!
After the ascent of Mount Mangone and the subsequent descent, you reach a rural agricultural landscape enriched by fruit trees, as well as centuries-old pines and olive trees. After admiring the beautiful scenic spot overlooking Piazza Armerina, you will pass through cultivated land, along a rural path of rare beauty.

This route also goes through a private property on which Trek & Kids holds an exclusive right of way: a unique opportunity to get to the Villa through the only existing footpath!

At the end of this trail, you can finally marvel at the wonderful Villa del Casale. But your adventure does not end here, since the visit of the ancient mosaics is a must-see during a visit to Piazza Armerina.

Through this itinerary, you can discover all the faces of our Sicily: from nature to culture, from city to country, with no chance to get bored!
